Omaha High/Low is the O in “h.o.r.s.e.” It’s the second most popular variation of poker in the world and also the second most popular poker game online, also known as Omaha Eight or Better or just Omaha 8/B.Don’t be confused by Omaha Hi/Low and Omaha High, if you don’t know what the “low” means then you will understand in a minute. The most common limit style is actually pot-limit which means your bet is limited to the size of the pot, but when you play this game in the “h.o.r.s.e” variation it will play in limit style.

How to Play:

Omaha Hi/Low is similar to Texas Holdem, but in this game you’ll get dealt 4 hole cards, instead of two. We have four stages: pre-flop, post-flop, turn and river, with a betting round after each stage. Then comes the showdown, each player needs to create the best poker hand and the best quality low hand, but you have some rules that say that you have to use 2 of your whole cards and three cards out the community cards. You can use the same cards to create both hands. Let me explain better, this is the “low” part of the game, the player that has the lowest hand will take half of the winners (Highest Hand) pot .In order for the hand to qualify to low all the cards have to be equal or lower then eight,Ace-2-3-4-5 is the best low hand possible, 8-7-6-5-4 is the worst low hand possible.


Double Suited: Means that two cards that have the same suit while the other two cards have another suit.

Scoop the Pot: Taking the entire pot! Means you won the high and the low hands.

Things You Have to Know:

1) The best starting hand is A-A-2-3 (double suited).

2) Quads are bad at Omaha Hi/Low, because you need to use 2 of your hole cards and 3 cards from the community cards.

3) Limit Omaha Hi/Lo is not a game of bluffing, not as much as Texas Holdem.

4) When players start to play Omaha 8/b they think that this is game of luck, it’s far from the truth.

Thank-You Letters And Notes

It would be appropriate for you to write thank-you letters and notes to the interviewers and the person who has set up the interview or recommended you for the vacancy. Do write the notes shortly after the interview when the memories are still fresh in various parties  minds. You may send the thank-you letters and notes via post or email.

As far as possible, write a separate note to each interviewer. Call the receptionist if you need to know the spelling of the names and actual titles. Make sure the notes are different in content and personalized for each interviewer. Proof read the thank-you notes a few times to ensure there are no spelling and grammar mistakes before sending them out. If somehow, you only manage to obtain one of the interviewer’s name and contact, write one note attention to that person but request him/her to help extend your appreciation to the other interviewers on your behalf politely.

Keep the thank-you letters and notes simple, short and objective. Do not try to sell yourself all over again. Remember the purpose of the thank-you letters and notes is to stay on the interviewers radar screen and stay ahead of other candidates.

Vintage Musings IV: getting a picture

Let me try the impossible and be brief.

Problem number one: we don’t use a pressure bomb to determine water stress. Of course this means that small differences will be difficult to detect.

Solution one: the rate of shoot growth (determined visually with almost weekly vineyard visits and by the number of times hedging was required) can be used as a good proxy for water stress when temperatures are in a normal range for growth.

Problem number two: I didn’t do any measurements over the last three years, just observations. Again this means small differences will be difficult to detect but since the rainfall amount was so drastically different I think it is safe to assume that differences were such that visual detection was obvious.

Solution number two: my objectivity. You’ll just have to trust me here. I can be objective to a fault. Just ask my wife; sometimes in a discussion I point out how she can better attack my arguments though I eventually end up in a disturbing argument with myself. OK, so I don’t go that far.

The previous paragraph alone should hint at my objectivity. I am such a nerd that I want you to be aware that I am aware of the subjective measures by which I am drawing these conclusions and yet I feel they are still solid. Actually they are common sense if you are up with current viticulture literature or understand – as Principles and Practices puts it – famous, high-quality wines often come from vineyards with relatively low fertility (read vigor).

After working with this vineyard for 4 vintages I have concluded that it is one such vineyard. Quite simply, the greatest quality gains this year were in the blocks that had the potential for the greatest devigoration from early water stress. And as per the previous paragraph this was evidenced by slow shoot growth that required NO hedging in blocks that typically require 1, 2, or 3 hedging passes.
